Reinventing Tradition: The Redesign of a 90's Inspired Logo for a Cat-Focused Organization

Sue - Creative Art Department

Circle to Custom

Logos from the 80s and 90s often featured circular designs gaining widespread popularity. For instance, a survey indicated that 70% of cat-related brands use similar visual elements (paws), leading to a lack of distinctiveness.

In this redesign, I tried to embrace the charm of the original logo while charting a new course. By moving away from the common paw print motif, they aimed to create a logo that was fresh yet familiar, giving the organization a clear edge in a competitive landscape.

Incorporating Local Identity

Integrating the organization's local identity was a crucial factor in this redesign and was done intiailly as well. I chose to use change the direction of the cat to face the organizations name while still using the state outline as a central element in the logo. This not only highlighted their commitment to cats but also reinforced their geographical roots. Research shows that brands that emphasize local identity see a 30% increase in community engagement, making this strategy particularly effective.

Color and Shapes as Branding Tools

The choice of colors is vital for a logo's impact. In this redesign, the color palette was meticulously selected to reflect the organization’s values and appeal to its target audience. By focusing the logo and the website, the branding stays consistent and engaging. The client had previously changed colors or used colors inconsistantly with the logo. Some social media sites used one color while it was presented differently in their newsletter.

Studies indicate that consistent branding can boost revenue by up to 23%, highlighting the significance of color in creating recognition. An effective color scheme can also evoke feelings and beliefs that resonate with supporters, reinforcing their connection to the organization and its mission. Therefore I presented some color choices allowing the staff to have an input to which color they felt could represent them best.

The organization has reported an increase in both volunteers and donations since the update.

Below you will see how the logo can be adapted for banners, social media icons, and T-shirts without compromising the branding.
